A man in New York attacked a peacock that was roaming the parking lot of a fast food restaurant because he believed the bird was a vampire, the Associated Press reported.

The attack was so severe, the bird was euthanized in the end, Richard Gentles, a spokesman for New York’s Center for Animal Care and Control told the AP.

"It’s just unbelievable that someone would do something to a poor, defenseless animal and do it in such a cruel fashion," Gentles said.

The man seized the bird by its neck, swung it around and threw it to the ground where he started kicking and stomping on it, a Burger King employee said.

When questioned by the employee, the attacker yelled, "I’m killing a vampire!"
