Campus groups: pump up the spirit

UH will host the first Greek-a-Palooza today with the hopes of not only welcoming students but also helping the community, Greek Area Coordinator Brian Sellen said.

"It’s not all wild parties. And while it is social, we give back," Sellen said of Greek Life.

The event, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the University Center, will involve a "T-shirt swap" to encourage students to donate T-shirts from other universities and colleges in exchange for a new UH T-shirt.

The clothes given by students will go to a women’s shelter, but Greek Life will also accept other donations.

"We’ll take anything, as all the shirts we receive will go to the battered women’s shelter," Assistant Director of Campus Activities and Greek Life Shelah Crear said. "We will be giving 200 shirts to the shelter, but if people want to donate extra things, we will be happy to take it."

Greek Life is not only a networking outlet, but also committed to brother- and sisterhood, a reason why Alpha Phi Alpha Vice President Keenan Coleman said he joined.

"When I first came to campus, they made me feel really welcome," Coleman said.

Alpha Phi Alpha will host its annual Park Jam between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the UC. Park Jam will have music, dancing and prize giveaways.

Cougar Spirit Thursdays are another effort to bolster school spirit from the UH Spirit and Traditions Councils.

Unlike "REDvolution" rallies, which are hosted at 1 p.m. every Thursday in the UC before home football games, Cougar Spirit Thursdays will be every week.

Greek-a-Palooza is sponsored by Greek Life, the UH Bookstore, UH Student Traditions and Campus Activities. For more information, Sellen can be contacted at [email protected] or (713) 743-5174.
