Sports editor to fill top position

Student Publications Committee members elected communication senior Zaneta Loh editor in chief of The Daily Cougar for the spring semester.

Loh, the current sports editor who ran unopposed in Monday’s election, said the newspaper could benefit from becoming more student oriented.

"The newspaper should build more relationships with campus organizations to build a stronger connection between the two," Loh said.?Loh has worked for the Cougar for one year as a sports writer, assistant sports editor and sports editor.

In addition to providing a wider array of workshops for staff members, expanding the paper’s Web site and re-establishing assistant editor positions, Loh hopes to set earlier deadlines to enhance the paper’s coverage.

"Having earlier deadlines set could solve a lot of problems," she said. "Letting reporters know the stages their stories go through is important."

Another way to keep to a strict deadline, she said, would be to hire a larger base of reporters and a dedicated editorial staff.

"I’m going to look for section editors who are passionate about what they’re doing," Loh said.

Applications for the Spring 2009 Daily Cougar staff are available in the Student Publications Business Office, Room 151, Communication Building.
