Soundcheck Mixtape

By Mike Damante

All good things must come to an end. Sound Check’s successful reign ends with this, the final edition. To go out in a blaze of glory, we compiled the first and last Sound Check Mixtape, a collection of songs important to us and relevant to our final piece.

1. blink-182 ‘- ‘Pathetic’

‘ ‘Don’t pull me down, this is where I belong. I think I’m different, this is where I belong.’

2. The Get Up Kid ‘- ‘I’m A Loner Dottie, A Rebel’

‘Last night everything was right and the rain was gone, one summer night’s the only time we’ve known.’

3. Alkaline Trio ‘- ‘Old School Reasons’

‘Please take these words and do with them what you’d like, the dream I had, it drove me mad, it’s just your time, it’s just my (expletive) life.’

4. Kid Cudi ‘- ‘Man On The Moon (The Anthem)’

‘ I guess if I was borin’ they’d love me more, I guess if I was simple in the mind everything would be fine.’

5. The Gaslight Anthem ‘- ‘Angry Johnny and the Radio’

‘I don’t drive nowhere, without the radio on ‘hellip; we always love the sad, sad songs.’

6. NOFX ‘- ‘Best God In Show’

‘I’ve no consideration, zero mutual respect, for billions who suffer from rational thought neglect.’

7. Descendents ‘- ‘Hope’

‘But I know someday, my day will come, I know someday I’ll be the only one.’

8. Lupe Fiasco ‘- ‘The Coolest’

‘Paper, the likes of which that I had never seen. Her eyes glow green with the logo of our dreams, the purpose of our scene.’

9. Motion City Soundtrack ‘- ‘This Is For Real’

‘This is for real, this time I mean it, I’m coming clean, please don’t let go, I said from the start that you could take it or leave it; prefer that you keep it.’

10. T.I. ‘- ‘Swagga Like Us’

‘Lookin’ from the surface it may seem like I got a reason to be nervous, then observe my work and see that my adversity was worth it.’

I enjoyed my time here and The Daily Cougar allotted me a forum for my thoughts on music. It also gave me the opportunity to interview my heroes – blink-182’s Tom Delonge and Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba. So, so long and thanks for the memories.

Here we are, the last Sound Check. Hopefully, for the past three semesters, you’ve enjoyed reading Sound Check just as much as we have enjoyed writing it.

Our main goal was to use this outlet as a way to share our obviously superior music tastes with you in hopes you would find a handful of new artists and bands to listen to and say you knew about them all along.

If you’ve taken at least one recommendation to heart, then our job was successful. Without further ado, I present you side B to the Sound Check Mixtape.

We feel that these songs create an incredible mix that encapsulates our biggest influences and favorite artists.

1. Northstar ‘- ‘Rocket City’ ‘Thinking I’ll fly away or take a long drive, and I won’t stop until I reach the other side.’

2. A Tribe Called Quest ‘- ‘Can I Kick It?’

‘Before this, did you really know what live was?’

3. Glassjaw ‘- ‘The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports’

‘Second behind my heart is my mind, third behind my mind is my body, fourth behind my body is my soul, and my heart stays in the lead.’

4. Jay-Z ‘- ‘Never Change’

‘I’ll never change, I’m too stuck in my ways.’

5. Further Seems Forever ‘- ‘How to Start a Fire’

‘We’ll burn down the monuments and build mountains in their place, we could see everything.’

6. The Notorious B.I.G. ‘- ‘Sky’s the Limit’

‘If the game shakes me or breaks me, I hope it makes me a better man.’

7. Thrice ‘- ‘So Strange I Remember You’

‘If we could only see us now.’

8. Nas ‘- ‘N.Y. State of Mind’

‘It drops deep as it does in my breath, I never sleep, ’cause sleep is the cousin of death.’

9. RX Bandits ‘- ”hellip; And the Battle Begun’

‘Box to box you know it never stops, we’re playing boomerang highways in an endless search for meaning.’

10. Kanye West ‘- ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing’

‘Cause when you try hard is when you die hard.’

That’ll do it for us. Good luck with school, onward and upward! This is Roshan Bhatt, signing off.
