CRIAG’S LIST: Students have plethora of fun options

With so many official UH athletic events to attend throughout the year, students forget that there is much more to do on and off campus. Today, I present a short list of must-dos before graduating.

1. Sit in the student section at a football game

At this point, any place students sit at during a football game doesn’t really matter, as long as they are in attendance. The Cougar football team feeds off the energy of the crowd, and no section provides a bigger boost than the student section, also known as the real ‘bleacher creatures.’

No matter how old students are, they should sit with these red-clad rowdies at least once before leaving their collegiate stomping grounds. Don’t bring seat cushions though, because there is usually no sitting. Pack a lozenge or two, as your voice is sure to suffer.

2. Climb the rock wall at the Rec Center

The Campus Wellness and Recreation Center boasts one of Houston’s biggest and best indoor rock walls. Standing at 52 feet, the Outdoor Adventure Rock Wall has more than 6,000 square feet of climbing area, giving climbers a variety of realistic features.

Use of the wall is free for students and CWRC members, and no experience is necessary. Equipment and climbing gear is also provided to those who want to tackle on the wall’s challenge.

3. Hit up a hoops game at Hofheinz

While UH may not have packed houses ‘agrave; la the Phi Slama Jama days, Hofheinz Pavilion is still a good place to catch a college basketball game. Home basketball games are free to students, and the fast-paced style of ball head coach Tom Penders has implemented is sure to excite.

If students still want to go down memory lane, the banners from the Olajuwon and Drexler days are hanging from the rafters, providing constant reminders of the rich history of our proud program.

4. Hang 10 on a weekend surf trip

The Outdoor Adventure Department offers weekend surfing trips to the Gulf Coast and a spring break excursion to Florida.

Starting in September, students can catch waves off Galveston and Mustang islands and grab a bite at a local restaurant before making the trek to campus.

Best of all, no experience is necessary, and surfboards and wetsuits are provided to students at no charge.

5. Join an intramural sports league

UH offers intramural sports teams and sports clubs for those who desire more competition than local pickup games with old men.

The Intramural Sports Department offers everything from flag football to extreme aqua polo, which is exactly what the name implies.

Deadlines for registration begin in early September. For more information, call the Intramural Sports Office at 713-743-8041.

UH’s Sport Clubs Program offers a variety of activities, from cycling to rugby. Students who join should expect a certain level of committment, because the teams will compete with other universities.

Students will become members of a highly competitive club that raises its own money, except for travel, which is provided by the university. Students in any of these clubs might want to lighten their course load.
