The truth of UH transportation

Parking and Transportation is the one UH department most all students love to hate.

During the 4th annual Student Leadership Forum, Parking and Transportation Director Bob Browand presented a set of slides that would sober any hot headed student staring down a citation.

“Our sole source of funding is from what we charge for parking and enforcement,” Browand said.

Parking and Transportation receives no state funding according to UH Administration and Finance.

They also receive no university funds. During the Fiscal year 2010, 50 percent of their funding came from student parking passes, 15 percent from faculty parking passes, 25 percent from enforcement (tickets and fines) and ten percent from visitor and meter parking.

So where does the money go? For FY 2011, 16 percent paid for salaries and benefits, 15 percent went to management and operation, 18 percent went to the shuttle service, 19 percent went to projects and 31 percent went to debt services.

Truth is, they’re just doing their job. If you don’t want to deal with fines, citations and tow-truck sharks, park off campus. Worried about night prowlers as you walk back to your car? UHDPS offers an escort service.

The Parking and Transportation advisory committee’s is still looking for five student members by the way.
