New program director at WRC brings big hope

The Women’s Resource Center is welcoming a new program coordinator.

Malkia Hutchinson is originally from Arlington. She received a sociology degree from Cornell University and worked in the Peace Corps in Swaziland and as an HIV/AIDS health educator in Washington, D.C.

“Part of my job will be being in the office and interacting with students, introducing them to the WRC and navigating them to the proper resources,” said Hutchinson.

Through her work, Hutchinson wishes to increase the WRC’s visibility in the UH community. She hopes to accomplish this by tabling and speaking at events on campus.

“It is important to me to educate young men about the role that they can play in preventing rape and gender-based violence,” Hutchinson said.

Hutchinson will also play a role in coordinating on-campus events based on specific trends she notices and topics she hears students would be interested in discussing.

“I have always wanted to work on a college campus,” Hutchinson said. “I’m really excited to be here.”
