Franklin out as radio voice of Cougars

Tom Franklin, the radio voice of UH athletics, will not return next season, said UH on Friday.

IMG College, the Cougars’ broadcast partner, will conduct a search for a new play-by-play voice after Franklin’s contract was not renewed.

Franklin, told the Houston Chronicle that officials did not give him a specific reason for the decision.

“It must be something in the water,” he said to the Chronicle. “The Astros switched leagues and switched broadcasters, and the Cougars are switching leagues and switching broadcasters.”

“If they feel they can do better, so be it. I’m a Cougar through and through, and I’ll root for them from the couch rather than the press box.”

Before Franklin’s nine-year run, he did play-by-play for the Oilers, Rice athletics and the Houston Hotshots indoor soccer team.

“We’d like to thank Tom for his contributions over the past nine years,” UH Athletics Director Mack Rhoades said. “He has certainly been a part of a number of amazing moments for Houston athletics, and we wish him the very best.”

  • Loved Tom Franklin. His genuine enthusiasm and ability to keep you interested will be hard to duplicate. Bad Move by UofH. Don’t think I’ll be tuning in. Thanks Tom!!!
