UH Staff Council prepares for elections

Nominations for the 2014 staff council membership election are now open and are being accepted.

“Staff are encouraged to consider self-nominating or nominating a co-worker to run for a staff council representative position,” said Staff Council President Pam Muscarello. “Staff Council’s mission is to serve as an advisory body to the campus administration and promote recognition of the staff contribution to the mission of the campus.”

The UH Staff Council serves as an advisory body to the President of the University and its administration. It consists of elected staff members from each division who represent the entire staff body. It aims to advance the exchange of information and express concerns or ideas among UH staff.

“Staff Council has allowed me the opportunity to connect with other staff members and students on campus,” said member and former Staff Council President Elsie Myers.

The UH Staff Council provides an opportunity for staff members to interact with each other. They have representatives in the following areas: Communications, Cougar First Impressions, Events, Student Affairs, Memberships and Elections and the University System Staff Executive Council.

“Being on Staff Council has impacted me by giving me the professional development that comes from working with and interacting with intelligent, diverse and passionate individuals who represent all areas of campus,” said member and Associate Director of Campus Recreation Jay Parks.

Staff Council is active within the UH community. This past March, they held their 24th Annual Spring Egg Hunt and had more than 500 attendees. They also were able to get over 800 donated game prizes which were given to participating UH families.

Myers said being on Staff Council is like being part of a team, especially during Staff Council events such as the Annual Spring Egg Hunt and Cougar First Impressions.

Staff Council is also dedicated to providing staff members the opportunity to advance their education by providing scholarship opportunities.

“Overall, being involved with Staff Council has influenced me with many positive aspects on campus and I hope that other staff members take this opportunity to participate in the 2014 Staff Council Elections,” Myers said.

All nominations made by staff members are welcome. Any staff members are eligible to be nominated for an at-large position. Staff members in any division can vote for at-large candidates.

“Staff Council encourages staff to become more involved by becoming a Staff Council representative,” Muscarello said.

In order to submit a nomination, staff must fill out a nomination form that can be found on the UH Staff Council website. Nominations will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 28.
