Cougars bare claws against Tigers in 5-4 rally

After 11 innings and a very late rally, UH took its 47th win of the season in the form of 5-4 comeback of regional host LSU, capping its second win to stay alive in the game in 24 hours. Trailing for the first eight innings of the game, UH relied upon a cascade of eighth-inning hits and stout relief pitching to stay alive.

Sophomore right fielder Kyle Survance went three for five, including knocking in the go-ahead runs in the form of a two out single, getting the lead over an LSU team that, save for a disputed inside the park homerun, had been largely held in check by the UH pitching trio of David Longville, Jared West and Chase Wellbrock.

UH’s flurry of runs, which happened in the eighth , was the only scoring until the 11th, when Kyle Survance singled and Wellbrock was able to hold the LSU batters at bay, getting three straight outs.

The win tonight means that will again face LSU at LSU’s Alex Box Stadium on Monday, June 2 at 7:00 p.m.

  • I had given up after 7 innings…only to realize I should never give up on this team. As Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.”

  • Honestly, I was so tired by the ninth inning, my nerves were bad, I left for what seemed like a moment and returned to see the cougars had won. I hate I missed the extra innings, but I love the win. I will be looking tonight for sure. Popcorn, soda and snacks are on standby.
