Cougars come just shy of advancing in AAC Championships

Friday marked the end of the Cougars’ tough season, as Houston was eliminated from the AAC Championships with a 3-1 loss to ECU.

Injuries and fatigue had plagued the Cougars throughout the season due to smaller numbers than some teams. A knee injury kept junior goalkeeper Jordan Brown out of Friday’s game.

Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Sterner filled the position well as she picked up two saves off of five shots on goal in her first career start, also serving as the most game time Sterner has had as she was in the box for a full 90 minutes.

Freshman forward Vanessa Almaguer also stepped up in the final game as she prevented the shutout as she knocked in her first career goal in to put the score to 3-1. Despite the loss, head coach Chris Pfau was very happy with the team’s performance this season.

“I am extremely proud of this team and we have improved so much this season,” Pfau said in a press release. “We only lost two non-conference games this season, we competed in every conference game, and really closed the gap from last year. I am excited about the progress and the future of this program.”
