Cougars come out strong in day one of tournament

The Cougars are hosting the Jason’s Deli Collegiate Invitational this weekend, and they started with dominance on Friday as they finished day one undefeated after sweeping No. 68 Kansas State.

The day started with doubles wins from both pairs of Cougars. Senior Elena Kordolaimi and freshman Angel Lorenzo won over their Kansas State competition with a score of 8-4, while junior Rocio Martin and senior Charlotte Phillips picked up an 8-6 win.

All four of the Cougars also earned victories in their singles matches, further displaying Houston’s tennis strength. Martin defeated her Kansas State opponent 6-1, 4-6 and 12-10, Phillips earned her victory with sets of 6-1, 4-6 and 10-6, and both Lorenzo and Kordolaimi swept their competition with 6-4, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-4 victories, respectively.

After Friday’s play, Houston and Northwestern State are the only two teams in the tournament that remain undefeated. The Cougars hope to continue their win streak through Saturday’s competition with No. 23 Rice as they meet at 1 p.m. on the Rice campus.
