Cougars take on Owls through strong second showing

The Cougars headed across town to take part in day two of the Jason’s Deli Collegiate Invitational Saturday as they took on mostly No. 23 Rice University opponents at Jack Hess Tennis Stadium.

With an undefeated record going into Saturday’s play, the expectations were high for the Cougars. The day started with doubles play where junior Rocio Martin and senior Charlotte Phillips defeated their Rice competition 8-1. Senior Elena Kordolaimi and freshman Angela Lorenzo fell to their doubles competition from Rice in a close match of 8-7 (2).

When it came to singles play, Lorenzo was the only player from Houston to not play a Rice opponent and she made the most of her opportunity. Facing off with an opponent from Louisiana Tech, Lorenzo earned a shutout 6-0, 6-0 victory, the only shutout of all 25 matches played on Saturday.

Kordolaimi also picked up a dominant 6-0, 6-1 win over her Rice opponent, while both Martin and Phillips were just short of adding to the Houston victories as they fell 6-2, 7-6 (4) and 6-1, 6-1, respectively.

The Cougars get back in action on Sunday as they take on Iowa State and TCU back home at the John E. Hoff Courts and aim to end the tournament on a high note.
