Basie, Ellington to be honored by Jazz Orchestra

Two of the jazz worlds greatest masters, Count Basie and Duke Ellington, will be honored at the Moores Opera House at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday night.

Henry Darragh and Tianna Hall will lend their vocal abilities on selected numbers.

“Take the A Train,” “In a Mellow Tone” and “Wind Machine” will be some of the featured works by Ellington. “Nice and Easy” and “Count me In”  will be some of Basie’s featured works.

“The transcriptions were taken off Ellington’s original recordings including the solos,” said Jazz Studies Director Noe Marmolejo in a press release. “The Basie material will capture his more relaxed, bluesy style. And we’ll feature some versatile arrangements of favorites, including a bossa nova version of Basie’s ‘April in Paris.’ ”

Tickets are $12 and discounted tickets are available for students and seniors for $7.
