Bearkats hold off Cougars 2-0

The UH softball team returned to play Wednesday night as it traveled to Huntsville for a game against in-state rival Sam Houston State after coming off a successful weekend against AAC foe East Carolina.

In what was the fastest game of the season for the Cougars, totaling a mere hour and 21 minutes, the Bearkats were able to silence the opposing bats en route to a 2-0 victory.

Sophomore Shelby Miller got the start for the Cougars, pitching a complete game while allowing only two runs on six hits. But it wasn’t enough as Bearkats pitcher Jordan Franks dominated all game, holding the Cougars to four hits and never letting a runner reach third on her way to a complete game shutout.

Sam Houston took the lead early with three hits in the bottom of the first that led to a run, but Miller easily rebounded and held the Bearkats scoreless over the next two innings before a solo shot in the bottom of the fourth made it 2-0 for good.

The Cougars will look to get back in the win column this weekend at home with a three game series against AAC foe No. 17/18 UCF. Play is scheduled to begin at noon Saturday with a doubleheader, with the series finale Sunday at 11 a.m.
