BREAKING: Two students in hospital after suspected drunken driving incident near Bayou Oaks

Two students were taken to a hospital late Thursday night after they were hit by a suspected drunken driver outside of Bayou Oaks on Calhoun Road at North MacGregor Way, according to the Houston Police Department.

A student speeding in a white pickup truck hit the two students after veering into the opposite lane to get ahead of a car. KHOU reported the truck clipped the car and then struck the students walking nearby.

The students have been identified as Mark Tartaglio and Corina Burnett. Tartaglio is listed in extremely critical condition. Burnett is in serious, but stable condition. Both are at Memorial Hermann.

The couple was returning from a sorority date-night party before the accident.

Police identified the driver as 23-year-old Marshall Schoen. Schoen, also a UH student according to the Campus Directory, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. His bail is set at $30,000.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the students. Within an hour, over $1,000 has already been donated.

  • What a terrible situation these two have been placed in because of some arrogant idiot. I just hope they come out of this okay, and hopefully better than before.

Now, what is UH going to do remind people of the devastating effects caused by drinking and driving?

I think there should be a mandatory orientation on Drinking and Driving for frats and new incoming members. I agree, there shouldn’t have to be any orientation on the affects of drinking and driving since we’ve been bombarded with it since high school, but it seems people always need a reminder.

      • He was arrested for DWI so yeah he was drunk. I spent yesterday at the hospital with the families so I think they would know the truth. Mark saved his girlfriend’s life by shoving her out of the way and he is still in critical condition. Maybe you should pray for the life of this truly excellent young man rather than spouting defense for a.drunk driver.

        • He was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. The keyword being suspicion.

          • Maybe instead of debating facts of an accident you should realize the truth. One extremely brave young man is dead and his girlfriend, who I know personally and does not deserve to live with anything like this, is left devistated because of a choice that driver cannot take back. Fact: it is truely inconciderate to try to down play the tragdy that occurred Thursday night. One life was lost and many others will never be the same and those are the only facts you should need.

            • You are so right on with your comments. We are left now to pray for strength for all those involved that have to find some way to cope with this reality no one asked for

      • How can you sit here and tell a bunch of communications students they are wrong? They study this stuff for crying out loud. That’s like saying every other news station is wrong. If multiple people are reporting this story then it is probably true. What benefit would there be of making things up about him? He was drinking that night plain and simple. So he MADE THE DECISION to get behind the wheel of his truck. How dare you try to defend him. He KILLED someone because he decided to drink and drive. He knew better. If you were really his friend, you would care enough to let him suffer the consequences of his actions because how else will he learn?

Don’t try and downplay someone’s suffering and the death of a student because you are worried about this guy for some strange reason.

  • This article isn’t correct not completely factual. This was accident caused by another driver in a black car. Marshall swerved to avoid hitting 4 kids in this car but the driver in the black car ran into him putting his truck up on a curb. This was an accident that could happen to anyone. Marshall immediately ran to try helping the kids that were victim of the accidents as soon as he realized what had happen.

Also, one child is in the hospital in credit all condition not two.

This was an accident that could happen to anyone driving where pedestrians are. I know Marshall and saw the whole thing. He’s a good kid, he volunteers and is a great friend. This was purely and accident a very unfortunate one.

    • Do you have a source for this? I’m wary of taking a random Internet commenter’s statement as fact when it’s in direct contrast to *everything* I’ve seen written about this incident.

    • “..he volunteers and is a great friend.” => That doesn’t mean anything.

I volunteer as well, does that make me a good person too?

Just because Marshall is your friend, that does not mean he is not guilty. He is clearly the one that caused all of this. He took a life.

  • Your version is incorrect…the white pick up hit the Infiniti by passing illegally on the left and in the incoming traffic lane. Your friend was speeding, plowed into the black Infiniti, which then hit these poor two innocent young people on the sidewalk. And to top it off, it appears that he, the driver of the white pick up, was intoxicated and was arrested. He is in jail, where he waits to see if his charge becomes vehicular manslaughter, if the innocent young man does not survive.
The man driving the black Infiniti was not at fault.
Yes, a very sad and unfortunate accident that could have been prevented had your friend chosen not to drive last night.

  • I know so many fraternity people who drive while drunk, and do so many other illegal activity. However the university always seems to forget and look away saying it was a few bad apples. I hope both students recover.

    • It’s like they live above the law with all of the rose-colored privilege. I mean in the defense of Greek Life I know SO many sorority members that pay their own dues, don’t act up like the genius in the article, etc. But all these primarily white males in fraternities act like because they’re in a frat and their folks pay for everything for them, they are totally above the rules much less the law. It’s ridiculous.

      • Get educated. You are sterotyping. Come poll the Sigma Nu kids. My kid is on scholarship and I don’t pay his dues. None of the actives – and I’m an alumni of the chapter – fit the spoiled label you are ascribing to them.
