Campus religious events feature free lunch, daily mass

School is back in session, which means life could get pretty hectic with classes, work, and maintaining a social life. You might find relief from day-to-day stress by joining an on-campus faith-based organization. Here’s a list of religious organizations holding events around campus during the first couple weeks of the semester:

Baptist Student Ministry 

BSM will host free lunch, a worship service and ultimate Frisbee in the dark with glow sticks during the first week on campus.

What: Free lunch

What: Glow Ultimate Frisbee
When: 8 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21
Where: BSM office, 4801 Calhoun Rd.

Church of Christ

The Church of Christ will have several events during the first two weeks of the semester. In addition to free lunch, which they provide every Wednesday during the fall and spring semesters, they will hold meditative readings of the Psalms as well as a movie night.

Houston Canterbury

Houston Canterbury, a ministry of the Episcopal Church, will begin holding its weekly common worship and Sunday services.

What: The Gathering – UH/TSU service
When: Weekly, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, beginning Aug. 20
Where: St. Luke the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 3530 Wheeler Ave.

What: Common Worship
When: Weekly, 12:15 to 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, beginning Aug. 24
Where: A.D. Bruce Religion Center Meditation Chapel

United Campus Ministry of Greater Houston

UCM, a ministry that supports the LGBTQ community, will begin holding its weekly Sunday dinners.

What: Soul Sunday Dinners
When: Weekly, 7 p.m. Sunday, beginning Aug. 20
Where: A.D. Bruce Religion Center Room 208

Catholic Student Organization

The Catholic Student Organization holds its daily mass Tuesday through Friday during the fall semester as well as a weekly Sunday mass.

What: Daily mass
When: Noon, every Tuesday through Friday
Where: Catholic Newman Center

What: Sunday mass
When: Weekly, 10:45 a.m. Sunday
Where: A.D. Bruce Religion Center

When: Weekly, 6 p.m. Sunday

Muslim Student Association

MSA plans to hold an event during the second week of school to participate in a campus fast. MSA President Samreen Gazi said they will break their fast together, and all are invited. The event is not yet finalized.
