Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some anticipated questions about thedailycougar.com. Questions about site features, policies and bugs not answered here may be directed to www@thedailycougar.com. Concerns about site content should be directed to editor@thedailycougar.com.

User accounts

Do I have to register?

Registration is not a requirement to view content on thedailycougar.com. But registered users do enjoy some benefits, including the ability to post comments automatically (without moderation). Registration is not restricted to UH students, faculty and staff — any member of the public may join. Also registration is required if you want to be eligible to host a blog on thedailycougar.com.

I have to give an e-mail address to register. How will I know it won’t be spammed?

The Daily Cougar won’t share your e-mail address with anyone. Site administrators will only use your e-mail address to notify you of new site policies or if you need to reset your password or remove your account.

I’m already a registered member, do I need to register again to receive the newsletter and to post classified ads?

Unfortunately, yes. These systems are managed separately and will require separate registration.

Blogs

Who gets a blog?

Blogs hosted by The Daily Cougar fall under two types: staff and community. Staff blogs are maintained by paid Daily Cougar staff members and generally will complement coverage in the print and online edition of the newspaper. Community blogs belong to members of the UH community and can cover a variety of topics.

Any member of the UH community — current students, faculty, staff and alumni — is eligible to have a community blog on thedailycougar.com. However, because we want to foster a strong community of active contributors, editorial discretion will be used in determining which blogs are created. Our goal is to have a large, diverse group of bloggers representing the myriad interests of the University, its student body and its faculty and staff.

Every blog author must be a registered member of thedailycougar.com

How long do I get to keep my blog?

If you regularly update your blog, you can keep the blog indefinitely. Understand: The Daily Cougar does not guarantee support for blogs for any length of time. Blog service may be discontinued at any time. Generally, blogs will be reviewed on a semester basis. Any blog not updated in 30 days is subject to deactivation.

Why can’t I change the look of my blog?

Because we want to maintain consistency across our site and to make it clear to readers that the blog is hosted by The Daily Cougar, we insist on controlling the overall look of every blog. We recognize the need for individual expression, and we encourage you to put that energy toward making your blog content creative and interesting.

Archives

I wrote an article for The Daily Cougar years ago. Can it be removed?

It is UH Student Publications policy not to modify the contents of our archives, digital or otherwise. This would be equivalent to taking one of our hard-bound archive book and cutting out an article from it. Student Publications retains the copyright to all original work published in The Daily Cougar or Houstonian yearbook.

I can’t find something in the archive. Can somebody help?

We don’t have a staff librarian but you can direct questions to archive@thedailycougar.com or call (713) 743-5350. It is helpful to know as much as possible about what you’re looking for, especially the date of publication.
