News Real: Double dipper

A best-selling author who pretended to be a 19-year-old male prostitute sought to defend herself in court Wednesday against charges that she defrauded a movie studio for the rights of her book, Reuters reported.

Sarah, a book about a transgender boy who works with his mother as a truck-stop prostitute, was released in 2000 under the name of J.T. Leroy, who was described as teenage male prostitute. In reality, Laura Albert, 41, wrote the book.

Lawyers for Antidote International Films argued that Albert created elaborate ruses to make people believe J.T. Leroy was a real person.

In past radio interviews, Albert would talk with a West Virginian accent, and for public appearances, her boyfriend’s half-sister to impersonate and play the part of Leroy.
