An ongoing study conducted by the UH Department of Health and Human Performance is searching for Hispanic women to participate in the Health Is Power study.
The study began in conjunction with the University of Texas at Austin during summer 2006 as a way to help participants measure their progress with exercise routines and to adopt healthier eating habits.
"We know that good health is one of the greatest benefits anyone can have, but getting there is always the challenge," UH assistant professor from Health and Human Performance and lead researcher Rebecca Lee said in a release. "Summer is a great time to refresh our health goals and HIP can help."
The HIP received a grant of $3 million from the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health for a five-year study, focusing on minority women, particularly black and Hispanic, and illnesses relating to obesity and diabetes. Lee also said that little research has been conducted on Hispanic women regarding health issues.
"We’re looking for Hispanic women who are ready to work together to improve their health," Lee said.
HIP is seeking females between the ages of 25 to 60 years for its study who can change their diet and activity without medical supervision. Participants will be assigned to physical exercise or nutritional classes and should expect keep up with the health related goals set up by the groups they belong.
Women interested in participating should contact Ashley Medina at [email protected] or (713) 743-1183.
