UH Police investigate damaged vehicles

UH police are investigating a suspect allegedly responsible for shooting at four students’ cars Thursday evening in Lot 6A, UH Police Capt. Brad Wigtil said.

The UHPD caught the incident on its surveillance cameras.

At about 10:30 p.m. a car drove into the parking lot, near Oberholtzer Hall, and the driver began shooting at other vehicles and then drove away, according to a UHPD report.

"(The suspect) used a pellet gun to shoot out the back windows of four cars," Wigtil said.

Nothing was stolen from the vehicles, and the motive is unknown, he said.

With the surveillance footage, the vehicle’s license plate was captured and traced.

The vehicle was traced, by a liscence plate number captured in surveillance footage, to Houston man, who had lent his car to his 18-year-old son that evening, Wigtil said. When the father asked his son about the incident, he admitted to his involvement.

No charges had been filed by late Saturday, but the suspect has hired legal counsel, Wigtil said.

The suspect is not a UH student, and police do not know where he attends high school.

The suspect was not alone during the incident, but would not reveal to police who his passenger was.

All four UH students had reported that their cars were damaged, and Wigitil said students should take all necessary precaution in such events.

"We need community assistance to report any suspicious activity so officers can check out these people," he said.
