Ruth Recommends: Local acts need some love too, Houston

Houston’s music scene is extremely diverse, hitting all sides of the musical spectrum. With local bands ranging from Nintendo pop and jazz improvisation to heavy metal and ska, Houstonians are spoiled when it comes to having a wide range of music to choose from in any given week.

But to keep such a good thing going, you’ve got to show the locals some love.

Such an opportunity will present itself this weekend as The Factory Party, a Houston-based indie-rock trio formerly known as Thieves Like Us, performs at 8 p.m. Friday at Next, 2020 McKinney St.

With Charlie Tijerina on vocals and guitar, Luis Estrada on drums and bassist

John O’Dowd, the up-and-coming locals sport a catchy pop-rock sound and deliver fun, energy-infused live performances that give concert goers an excuse to cut a rug.

The trio, which frequents venues throughout Houston and then some, carries a clean sound saturated with an agreeable concoction of quirky guitar hooks, edgy bass rhythms and fervent vocals.

Their songs "Indie Rockstar," "No Control" and "Do Me Right" are somewhat reminiscent of the sounds of New York-based rock band The Strokes, as the pieces are colored with indie-enthused tones, high-pitched guitar melodies and steadfast drumming.

Instead of spending your Friday night wandering aimlessly about Houston, desperately searching for some form of entertainment, round up some friends and stop in on The Factory Party. These locals are sure to give you what you need.

Houston-based group Program will also perform a headlining act.

Cover charge is $10 for general admission. For more information, call (713) 221-8833. To check out their music, go to www.myspace.com/thefactorypartymusic.
