Khator to visit University today

University faculty, staff and students will have a chance to meet the next UH president and chancellor when the UH System Board of Regents is expected to confirm sole finalist Renu Khator’s appointment today.

The board will vote to confirm University of South Florida Provost Renu Khator as the next UH president and UH System chancellor at the Hilton Hotel in the Grand Ballroom at 8:30 a.m. For those not able to attend, a webcast will be available at http://mediaweb.uh.edu/live/live.gtl

"Dr. Khator is the right person at the right time for the University of Houston System," board chairman Welcome Wilson said when Khator was announced as the sole finalist last month.

A meet and greet at the University Center Arbor, which will be hosted by the Student Government Association and the Division of Student Affairs, will also give students an opportunity to meet the next president and chancellor.

"For any university, I think the biggest priority should be students – that is the most important thing,"Khator said in a previous interview with The Daily Cougar.

Khator’s confirmation comes after a 21-day period in which a candidate’s initial announcement is made before a final vote is taken, according to section 51.913 of the Texas Education Code.

She is expected to start her role as president in January 2008. She is the provost and senior vice president at the University of South Florida. Khator, originally from India, earned her master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University where she specialized in environmental policy.

Interim UH President and UH System Chancellor John Rudley is expected to return to his previous position of vice chancellor and vice president of Finance and Administration once Khator takes over the position in the spring
