UH opens doors to Houston artwork

Houston-area artists have the opportunity to get their work in the public eye this week.

The Blaffer Gallery is holding an open call for Houston-based artists looking to get their work exhibited at the 2008 Houston Area Exhibition at the Blaffer Gallery. The deadline is Thursday.

Since 1974 the gallery has hosted Houston artists’ work. For the last exhibition in 2004, 14 artist were chosen to show their work out of more than 300 applications. The Houston Area exhibition happens every four years and Blaffer Gallery expects to receive even more applications this year.

"The exhibition reflects the museum’s commitment to showcasing the work of talented local artists," the Blaffer Gallery Web site said.

This opportunity is open to anyone over the age of 18 living within a 100-mile radius of Houston. Works recently displayed in the Houston area will not be accepted. Media such as paintings, photography and sculpture will be considered for exhibition.

"I will be judging this year’s exhibition and I will simply be looking for the best work being made in Houston today. Work that stands out not only in the local context, but that also has the potential to compete on a national and international level," Blaffer Gallery Curator Claudia Schmuckli said.

Schmuckli is asking for participants to submit their work on up to 20 slides on DVD or CD-rom. Along with the slides, participants should include the name of the artist, title, media, dimensions, orientation and the year the work was created. Before sealing the envelope, a resume with contact information should be included.

"I am very excited to be in charge of next year’s HAE and hope that its 10th incarnation will be its best yet," Shmuckli said.

Artists who want their work to be considered for exhibition can either email their material to [email protected] or address their envelope to:

Curator Blaffer Gallery The Art Museum of the University of Houston 120 Fine Arts Building Houston, TX 77204-4018

Applicants who would like to receive back their material must include a self-addressed stamped envelope.
