Perhaps you found an extremely comfortable rock to live under without television, the Internet or a subscription to a newspaper, or maybe you just don’t like sports, either way, the excuses stop here. If you haven’t heard, the Houston Rockets (44-20) are now at 20 in their win streak.
Our Houston Rockets, under the leadership of new head coach Rick Adelman, are the first to accomplish this feat in more than 30 years.
The Rockets are now one of only three teams to have 20 consecutive wins in the NBA. The other two teams that accomplished this were the 1971-72 Lakers, who ended their streak with 33 wins, and the 1970-71 Bucks, who ended their streak at 20.
Houston got to number 20 on Wednesday night with an 83-75 win over the Atlanta Hawks, a win guard Tracy McGrady described as "ugly," but The Houston Chronicle’s Richard Justice called "beautiful."
McGrady finished with 28 points against Atlanta and forward Shane Battier contributed 15 of his own.
Perhaps most surprising is that the Rockets have won their last eight games without the help of their All-Star center Yao Ming, who left the season with a broken left foot last month.
ESPN.com’s John Hollinger is projecting the Rockets have a 99.9 percent chance of making it to the playoffs this year.
With the Rockets making history, sports experts are getting excited.
In fact, Houston is getting excited too.
The Rockets have us all nostalgic for the time when we were back-to-back world champions in the early 90s. The last time the hometown basketball team garnered this much attention, we were living in "Clutch City."
T-Mac and the Rockets will next face the Charlotte Bobcats at 8:30 p.m. today at home.
After the close win against Atlanta on Wednesday, Battier said it was a tough game because the team had to create its own energy and excitement.
Let’s not leave it up to the team that has already worked so hard to create the energy and excitement they need to win tonight. The Rockets deserve to have a full house cheering them on as they continue to defend their historical win streak.
If you’ve never been to a Rockets game, now is the time to go. With the extra boost of confidence the Rockets have because of their win streak, they are sure to put on a memorable show for their fans.
