Student government administration says goodbye

The 44th administration of the Student Government Association Senate had its final meeting Wednesday.

SGA President David Rosen said he remembered when he first stood before the senate three years ago and when he first campaigned.

"I still remember the thrill of making new friends that had the fire in their eyes to change things, and I’ll never forget the intellectual rush that comes with a fresh new idea," he said.

Rosen said he was proud that the SGA Senate worked to cap tuition increases, extend the family contract to $30,000 a year and create a two-for-one deal on Summer IV classes.

He said he was proud to have fought the administration "when it was wrong" and to have helped people who were dropped from their classes by PeopleSoft 8.9; abolishing party systems in the SGA election ballot; passing legislation for the expansion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual rights; and to have increased voter turnout in the SGA elections.

Rosen said it was the new administration’s job to take the SGA Senate to another level.

"Never forget, as some people that have come before us already have, that your efforts to change the way this school works is more important that editing your r’eacute;sum’eacute;," he said.

Rosen said that even though he was going to miss the people he worked with, he was confident in the next SGA president, Samuel Dike, who is the current vice president.

Dike said not a lot of people realize how much the 44th Administration put into this year.

"We care about the students, we care about this campus and we care about the University of Houston," he said.

Dike said in the next administration he wants to elevate the student experience and continue working to solve problems within the University.

SGA Regent Liaison Judah Johns, SGA Director of Finance Kelli Harper, SGA Director of Public Relations Kayley Sanders and SGA Senators Aleah Al-Sad, Mubeen Khumawala, Tim O’Brien, Gus Forward, Vanessa Hall, John Phillips, Shameria Davis and Norma Islam did not attend the meeting.
