Caution prompted by campus robberies

The UH Department of Safety is urging students to be vigilant after two robberies on campus this week.

The first incident occurred Tuesday at 12:10 a.m., while the second was at about 11 p.m. Wednesday night in parking lots at the University while students were traveling on foot.

"Fortunately, nobody was injured in either case," Police Captain Brad Wigtil said.

During Tuesday’s incident, a male student and his friend reported being threatened with a handgun and ordered to surrender a backpack to the suspect, a Hispanic male, in Lot 5B.

On Wednesday, UHPD received a report from another male student who said he was slammed against the Power Plant wall beside Lot 19F while walking to his car. He was then told to hand over his wallet and keys to a black male suspect.

Both investigations are ongoing, Wigtil said. It is unknown if the incidents are related.

Tuesday’s suspect had a black, large framed semi-automatic pistol and was driving a light colored four-door sedan. The complainant recalled RPJ-61_ as a possible portion of the license plate, which may be inaccurate, according to a security alert.

The black male was on foot with no known weapon.

Students are urged to remain cautious and report anything out of the ordinary to UHPD immediately.

"We really want to encourage anyone who may have seen activity in those areas to call 713-743-3333, to report anything they might have seen," Wigtil said.

DPS has sent two security alerts through e-mail to warn students of the incidents.

Anything students may have seen could be a key piece to the case, Wigtil said.

"Community members: remain observant and if you see any circumstance or anyone who is suspicious, call so we can deal with the suspicious circumstances or suspicious persons," Wigtil said.
