Ah, Red Bull! Is there any college student that doesn’t know of and value its miraculous ability to increase energy and focus the night before deadlines and finals? Now Red Bull has provided fans with one more reason to appreciate it – its ability to create art.
Last weekend at the Houston Galleria, Red Bull premiered its free "Red Bull Art of Can" exhibit. The exhibit celebrates all things Red Bull and features 47 works of art, mainly sculptures, made from Red Bull cans or otherwise inspired by the energy drink. Some sculptures on display include a floating astronaut, a chess set, a race car, an owl and even a Texans football helmet.
Some pieces are small, such as "Red Bull Unicorn," by Iris Rosenberg of New York City. Other pieces, such as first-place winner "Unbridled," a bull kicking a china cabinet by Michael Fiedler of Pennsylvania, are life sized. Second place went to a tumbleweed sculpture titled "Sojourn," by Dale Busta of Ohio, which is made exclusively of Red Bull can rims.
Two University of Houston students participated in the exhibit. Sergio Aleman, an architectural industrial design major, created a Red Bull portrait of Barack Obama. Titled "Vote," it consists of multiple layers of Red Bull chads. John Sanchez, an art history major, submitted the sculpture "Alteza," his version of a female sea goddess.
The exhibit is on view at the Galleria entrance to Neiman Marcus, and it runs through July 25. While the idea to display art made of Red Bull cans may seem unusual (or just another marketing stunt), the exhibit is actually very popular, with many in the crowd snapping pictures of themselves next to their favorite pieces. It is definitely worth a look, so go check out the exhibit and support the UH artists
