Know your candidates

In an effort to increase student voter turnout for the 2008 presidential elections, members of Students for Barack Obama at UH will spend their week manning voter registration tables and passing out informational handouts on presidential candidates and their running mates.

Because they feel it’s important for students to know about each candidate and their platforms before casting their vote, the group opted to pass out literature on both Barack Obama and John McCain.

"It’s not just about Obama supporters. We want students to actually make informed decisions prior to voting," sociology senior and Students for Barack Obama at UH outreach coordinator LaShic Patterson said. "It’s important for students to know the issues and how their vote is going to affect their lives four or eight years from now."

The drive will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Wednesday at the University Center and near the Taco Bell in the Satellite, and also from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday at the University Center near Wendy’s.

The student group will have four deputized students on site to register voters and welcomes non-UH volunteers to help out. The event is open to students, faculty and staff. Obama freebies, including posters, buttons and stickers will also be available.
