FIVE MINUTES OF FAME: Freshman’s answer to peer pressure: assertiveness

Amina Rivera: Some colleges favor lowering the legal drinking age from 21 to 18 to curb binge drinking. Do you think this is a good idea?

Jonathan Angert: I think it’s a good idea if you keep it on campus. The college can monitor where people were drinking, making it safer.

Rivera: What other measures can colleges use to curb binge drinking?

Angert: They could crack down and have more regulation.

Rivera: How old were you when you had your first drink?

Angert: The only thing I’ve really had were sips. That would probably be around 12.

Rivera: So, how old are you now?

Angert: I’m 19.

Rivera: What are some precautions you and your friends can take when you are old enough to drink?

Angert: Set limits on how much they want to drink for the night. My personal opinion: If they’re of age they can do whatever they want, cause it’s their life.

Rivera: How many drinks do think is enough?

Angert: I don’t drink, so I don’t really know, but I guess you could say two drinks.

Rivera: Have you ever been pressured to drink?

Angert: Yeah. I said no.

Rivera: How do you respond to pressure?

Angert: I just say no. I just don’t want it and I just say no. Be assertive.

Rivera: Whose responsibility is it to educate students and young people about drinking and moderation?

Angert: Parents and schools, both of them.
