Hurricane Ike left University grounds with fallen trees, downed lampposts and scattered debris last week. However, as workers cleaned up high traffic spots on campus it gave way to a massive collection of trash growing in parking Lot 16D.
"We had to clean up the campus and we couldn’t really throw all of the debris away because we had to give the insurance adjusters an opportunity to inspect it," said Pat Sanchez, director of building maintenance.
Plant Operations had contractors build a temporary fence for the debris on Sept. 14, which spanned more than 300 student parking spaces.
"We tried to centralize all the debris. We didn’t want it collected in more spots around campus," Sanchez said.
Sanchez said Plant Operations received numerous complaints about the location of the trash taking up a great number of parking spots.
"We know that the spaces are premium. We’ve received zillions of complaints, even more than the spaces we’ve used," Sanchez said.
Sanchez said since the insurance adjusters have already evaluated the campus damages, they can now properly dispose of the waste, and they intend to have the lot cleared by Monday.
