FORUM: Biden or Palin?

Palin’s inexperience will likely be her downfall

Joshua Delano

Gov. Sarah Palin was a smart political pick for Sen. John McCain – at least in the short run. Now, it turns out Palin doesn’t know too much about foreign policy.

Meanwhile, at the Sen. Barack Obama campaign there is some buyer’s remorse, as Sen. Joe Biden has said Sen. Hillary Clinton would have been a better pick than him. He once asked a man in a wheelchair to stand – not a proud moment for the Obama campaign.

It’s a great year for politics, but definitely not for vice presidential candidates. For those of us who can read, write and think, it is obvious after the Katie Couric interview and the Saturday Night Live skits with Tina Fey nailing her Palin impression that the governor from Alaska may not even be able to spell foreign policy, much less speak authoritatively about it.

I’d rather have Biden running the country if, God forbid, something happened to President Obama. I don’t know about you, but I prefer someone with 30-plus years of foreign policy experience to someone who feels seeing Russia from their backyard helps their qualifications.

Sarah, keep your lipstick, dear. I agree with you on the Bible, and we can even go shooting at the gun range sometime, but I’m going to have to agree with mon cousin from Louisiana, James Carville, and ask you to please stay out of the White House, and just make way for "our girl" Hillary in 2012.

Palin’s moose skills major factor in candidacy

Rami Schindler

A common criticism of Gov. Sarah Palin is that her ability to hunt and dress moose is negligible in the run for vice president. Clearly, the pundits involved could not be more mistaken.

On Jan. 6, 2007, the Associated Press reported such an overpopulation of moose in Utah that several had to be airlifted to Colorado. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources was forced to ambush 400 moose in the dead of night, blindfold them, bind their spindly legs, wrap them in a tarp and lift them via helicopter into the neighboring state.

Why did Utah make such a sudden move? There’s only one explanation: the moose population planned this from the start.

Consider this scenario: President John McCain walks into the Oval Office and comes face-to-face with a fully grown 1,200-pound Alaska moose. Not expecting that, the poor old guy has a heart attack, allowing the moose full access to all of McCain’s files, the red telephone and that cool secret compartment in the Resolute desk.

Would you want a moose running your country? Do you want to wake up every morning to a hearty breakfast of twig tips? Will we be forced to update building codes to allow extra headroom in every doorway? What’s next?

I don’t want that future for my children, either. That is why we need a vice president who would be able to protect America from Bullwinkle and his thugs. That’s right; America needs Teddy Roosevelt – I mean, Sarah Palin.

Vice presidential candidates show ability for the American people

Alana MousaviDin

Choosing a presidential ticket via vice presidential candidate is assuming the worst has happened to whomever is elected president.

Gov. Palin is young, smart, pretty and has done great things for the state of Alaska. She is an innovative go-getter, ready to take on any challenge set before her with full strength. She is what most would call a "super-mom," handling daily life and the struggles it brings with a big smile on her doe-eyed face. The look in those eyes, however, indicates a pistol ready to fire if necessary.

Palin has reformed many aspects of government, all the while keeping the importance of the environment in mind. She promotes responsible recovery of domestic oil and natural gas resources. However, very few of her political ventures have actually dealt with things on a national level, and fewer have had national impact.

Sen. Joe Biden is also family-oriented, but has experience in his corner. He is chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and is a recognized leading authority on foreign policy – something the U.S. desperately needs improvement in.

Either candidate would make a good president, should the need arise. For what it’s worth, Biden simply has more to offer U.S. citizens.
