Joy Gargis: Today’s my birthday.
Signe Cluiss: Well, happy birthday! Where are you coming from right now?
Gargis: I was coming from the (Science Building). I was studying.
Cluiss: So you spent your birthday studying?
Gargis: Yes, unfortunately, but I’m going to do something this weekend. I’m going to the club.
Cluiss: Which club?
Gargis: I like Hush, actually . . . off I-10 in Katy. It’s pretty far, but that’s fine because I’ve been there before.
Cluiss: Do you see many UH students at Hush?
Gargis: No, (laughs) I wouldn’t know how to pick them out.
Cluiss: Do you like any other clubs in Houston?
Gargis: I’m not that big of a clubber. I just went with a couple of friends.
Cluiss: What kind of crowd do you think Hush pulls in? What kind of music is played?
Gargis: They play all types, so it’s not secluded to one type of music.
Cluiss: Do you stay on campus a lot (as a commuter)?
Gargis: I’m basically here all day. I don’t leave here at nights because I’m in band so I have practice. During the day, I study, and at night, I have marching band.
Cluiss: What instrument do you play?
Gargis: Alto saxophone.
Cluiss: Cool, I played alto saxophone when I was in high school. How long have you been in marching band?
Gargis: Since my freshman year.
Cluiss: What’s the director’s name?
Gargis: David Bertman.
Cluiss: And he directs that really famous Drum Corps International marching band The Cavaliers, right?
Gargis: Yeah, I think he does that over the summer. I don’t know much about Drum Corps, but I know that much.
Cluiss: What’s the marching band’s show called this year?
Gargis: The previous show we did for Southern was "The Beatles Opener." Now we’re working on another one. I think our tune is called "Betty Be Good To Me."
Cluiss: Do you enjoy football games? I know that when you’re in band you must attend them.
Gargis: I love football games. I love them. I will support UH no matter what, despite the fact that we lost three in a row. But at least we beat (East Carolina).
Cluiss: How do you see the rest of the season playing out?
Gargis: I see it being really good. I guess we have a new coaching staff. We’ve had a few fall-backs, but we’re going to catch up. I know it.
