RUTH RECOMMENDS: Week’s offerings reason to celebrate

With myriad equally worthy bands lined up to grace Houston stages this week, concertgoers may find themselves basking in the local music scene a few times.

Hailing from Brooklyn, Japanther will share its messy fusion of pop punk at an early show hosted by Indie Houston on Sunday at the Caroline Collective, 4820 Caroline St.

The pairing of Ian Vanek’s offbeat drumming and spliced rap cassette sounds with Matt Reilly’s fuzzy bass lines and droning distortion gives the band’s short, punk singsongs a raw touch that’s only enhanced in its live performances.

Reilly’s jumpy key rhythms, performed on his vintage Casio, will leave fans itching to dance.

The duo will play along with six other acts for only $6.

Killer Dreamer, American Sharks, The Mathletes, GRRRL Parts and Fat Tony will perform opening acts starting at 4 p.m.

Weezer fans can treat themselves to a dose of the alternative rock quartet’s newest catchy tunes as the band makes a stop in Houston on Thursday.

With frontman Rivers Cuomo, the veteran rock band will perform a slew of sing-a-long pieces from its latest self-titled release.

The band will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Reliant Arena. Opening acts include Angels and Airwaves and Tokyo Police Club.

General admission is $10. UH students can purchase tickets at a discounted cost.

The McKenzies will perform its colorful pop rock tunes along with B L A C K I E, Health and Female Demand starting at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Numbers, 300 Westheimer Road. Cover is $10.
