The time has finally come to break out those fall threads, so if everything’s looking thin in the closet, here’s what to go out and buy.
For both men and women one snazzy number to have this fall is the cardigan shawl collar. It’s soft, comfortable and easy to wear. Basically it’s like a normal cardigan but with a warm collar that can be popped up for neck warmth. Also, for men and women who want to go for the layered look try the solid black vest. It’s an indispensable addition to any look, and can easily be worn under a jacket.
We’ll start off with the men, since there are certain fall items every man must have. The first is the cardigan. Some may call them grandpa sweaters, but if you get one that is slim fitted you’ll look sleek and modern. In addition, every guy should have a nice coat that reaches to mid thigh. Coats come in all sorts of styles, such as houndstooth, camel colored and striped, but patterned coats are coming strong this year; such as madras, checkers, tweed and tartan patterned coats that complement monochromatic wardrobes. Also, for a classic stylish look, try a Pea coat.
Another trendy item this season is the tweed blazer. Tweed is a Scottish wool that has many different colors in the cloth and is exceptionally warm. Familiarize yourself with the Sean Connery tweed blazer; which he’s worn in many of his movies.
There are a number of reasons not to wear a hoodie, but if you must, go with a plain colored one – leave the Korn hoodie at home, please. And, last but not least, a scarf will never hurt your wardrobe. French guys do it, and they get all the girls.
Women, on the other hand, have many more options this fall. One trend to emulate is the powerful female that includes tuxedo jackets and long oxford shirts, or high-waist tailored pants. Steal the authority men have over such items.
For the ladies with strong attitudes, one domineering print this season is leopard, which makes a great pattern for a coat.
This season also be sure to try black lace over white anything; blouses, pants, jackets or even skirts. It’s elegant and subtly sexy.
For skirts this fall there is one overarching rule: either go short or go long – no mid-length skirts will be accepted for the astute fashionista.
The continuous trend, which began in 2005, that is still in this fall is bohemian chic. Being resurrected are the long bohemian dresses and bright hippie patterns. The look that can easily be rocked with tunics, lots of scarves and big intricate bejeweled belts is back.
Another must-have for the crisp fall weather is a coat, and this season there are a number of ways you can go. Although Mongolian fur is going to be big, what has really caught on is the structural coat. Also, structured but with a bit more feminine flare will be the A-frame shape. For those unsure, this item is tailored at the top than bells out from the waist down, creating an A-shape. Be on the lookout for big, geometrically designed collars that look like abstract sculptures that will be popping up along with the classic stream-lined coat that Audrey Hepburn made famous in Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
If you want something different from the coat this fall, one item you should try is the cape. Classy and easy to wear, just throw it over your shoulders and button one button. There are a number of styles including a poncho type to capes with more buttons and a hood. To out do everybody this season, get a thick, furry winter hat.
Now go out, get what you need and look good this fall.
