OK, so maybe I spoke too soon about the Houston Aeros.
In my last column, I predicted the Aeros would struggle to make the American Hockey League playoffs this season. So far, they’re off to a decent start.
The Aeros (4-3) were one of the hottest teams in the early going, winning their first four games. They’ve since dropped three consecutive contests but have played well for the most part.
Forward Krys Kolanos is on an offensive tear, netting five goals coming off only 25 shots on net in just five games. Goaltender Nolan Schaefer’s stingy 2.46 goals-against average is another big reason the Aeros are off to a nice start.
Voros hits Broadway
Former Aero Aaron Voros is enjoying a successful season thus far with the New York Rangers in the NHL. Last season with the Minnesota Wild, Voros tallied seven goals and seven assists. As of Monday, he has five goals and four assists and is quickly becoming a fan favorite at Madison Square Garden.
Don’t pull a Sprewell
I know it is just an NBA preseason game, but New York forward Eddie Curry was dressed and didn’t start, let alone even play, in the Knicks’ 101-90 Oct. 21 loss to the Boston Celtics. When a player is all dressed and ready to go, rather than scratched or sitting out, you’d expect them to get some playing time.
Barring the possibility of an injury, Curry could easily have had a difference of opinion with head coach Mike D’Antoni. Spats and disputes with coaches can only lead to less playing time or banishment, and, if you’re Latrell Sprewell, choking your coach.
The would-be King
Speaking of the NBA, the regular season starts this week, and a new breed of young talent will be on display. Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose should lead the talented rookie class of 2008-09, which also includes Miami Heat forward Michael Beasley and Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol.
A hungry LeBron James looks to add a championship ring to go along with his crown as the "King" of Cleveland. The Cavaliers are expecting bigger things from James and co. this season with new point guard Mo Williams on board to take some of the scoring burden off James’ shoulders.
Is it too early to predict a Los Angeles Lakers-Cavaliers matchup in the NBA finals? James against Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant would be a huge ratings draw and a dream come true for league commissioner David Stern.
