If Austin City Limits is too expensive or if South by Southwest’s overabundance of indie-hype is too pretentious, then Fun Fun Fun Fest just might be the show for you.
The event will be held this weekend at Austin’s Waterloo Park. Fun Fun Fun Fest began in 2006, and since then has been a staple in the Austin festival scene booking acts from every genre imaginable. There will be an indie rock/progressive stage, a stage for solo acts, a punk/hardcore stage and one for hip-hop and electronica.
On Saturday, indie- heavyweights…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead (4:50 p.m.) and Deerhoof (6:30 p.m.) will take center stage. Minnesota’s favorite rapper, Atmosphere will perform at 7:35 p.m., while metal act Municipal Waste starts its set at 5:20 p.m. It will be a reunion show for some, as influential hardcore act Integrity, old-school punkers The Dead Milkmen and the post-punk sounds of Rival Schools will all be making rare appearances. Local street punks the Krum Bums will have a chance to shine playing before so-cal legends The Adolescents and ALL. ALL consists of 3/4’s of the pop-punk pioneers the Descendents; substituting Chad Price on vocals for Milo Aukerman, who is now a biochemist.
Islands, Clap Your Hands and Say Yeah, Minus the Bear, Leftover Crack and The Bouncing Souls will be headlining a thick Sunday lineup. Veteran hardcore bands Cro-Mags and Bad Brains will likely draw a lot of spectators of fans new and old. Kevin Seconds, of 7 Seconds fame, will have a solo performance Sunday afternoon. The Revival Tour will invade Fun Fun Fun Fest with a 3-hour set, which includes performances from Chuck Ragan (Hot Water Music), Tom Gabel (Against Me!), Tim Barry (Avail) and Ben Nichols (Lucero).
