FIGHTING WORDS

Giants maintain top position in league

The Tennessee Titans remain the league’s lone undefeated squad at 8-0, but I would rate the New York Giants (7-1) just a notch above them. The reason is simple: the Giants are a more complete team. Tennessee has a world-class defense that has allowed a league-low 12.9 points per game, but its offense is conservative, doing just enough to get by. Quarterback Kerry Collins doesn’t throw for a ton of yards, but he also doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. The Titans prefer to pound opponents with running backs Chris Johnson and LenDale White. Woe to the day when someone shuts down that rushing attack.

The Giants, on the other hand, have both an explosive defense (only 16.1 points allowed per game) and offense. Quarterback Eli Manning (12 touchdowns) continues to make big throws, spreading the ball around to Steve Smith, Plaxico Burress and Amani Toomer, and running backs Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward have been great.

The Titans are a great team, but I’d take the Giants any day.

Colts don’t have what it takes to top Titans in stats

The Titans’ 8-0 record speaks for itself. The AFC South has been dominated by the Indianapolis Colts, but with the injuries to the offensive line and running back Joseph Addai, their ground game is ranked last in the league with 70.1 yard per game.

This is the opportunity that the Titans need. They are ranked ninth in the league with 24.9 points per game and third in the league with 149.1 rushing yards per game.

Sure, they rely on running backs Chris Johnson and LenDale White a lot, but no one has been able to stop them. Johnson and White will continue to pound and slash defenses at will. Collins hasn’t been airing it out, but he has been managing the team and limiting turnovers, and it shows in their 10-plus turnover ratio. Along with their stellar defense, which is ranked in the top 10 in points allowed, yards allowed and rushing yards allowed, the Titans are the team to beat.

Giants have work before they can match Titans

While it’s hard to go with an AFC team here, I have to say that the Titans are the team to beat so far. The Giants are a tough second, but since their only loss came to Cleveland and, other than the Washington Redskins, they haven’t beat any significant teams, an undefeated record sets them apart.

Don’t get me wrong – I think we all know how irrelevant an undefeated record is, but considering there aren’t any great teams this year, it has to be the deciding factor.

That being said, both teams have major problems. Collins is a dud and the Tennessee offense will eventually cost the team a loss or two – likely in the playoffs. The Giants defense has holes they can’t fill and Plaxico Burress has become this year’s Terrell Owens.

Ask this question a couple of weeks from now and neither of these teams may be named. The Carolina Panthers are quietly winning games, and the Colts are on the rise. But for now, it has to be the Titans.

Judge Dredd

Judge Dredd is all about the Dolphins – as usual

Forget the Titans. Those bastards from Tennessee aren’t worthy enough to even think about going undefeated. The ’72 Dolphins were and will remain the only NFL to finish a season without a loss.

Speaking of the Dolphins, Tony Sparano’s bunch is Judge Dredd’s pick for the best team in the NFL.

Now a few fools out there might want to point out the fact that the Dolphins are 4-4. Well, those people are sissies and will be severely punished for questioning Judge Dredd. No one will be safe from the wrath of his almighty laser eyes.

The Titans are lucky they were not scheduled to play the Dolphins this season, because Ronnie Brown would have a field day and Joey Porter would make Collins’ life a living hell by using his "popcorn muscles."

Verdict: Judge Dredd wins because he reigns supreme over all-things sports and has an ego the size of Harris County.
