Ryan Hartwig: How long have you been high jumping in track and field?
Ivan Diggs: Since Fall ’04.
Hartwig: Did you play in high school?
Diggs: Yes, I came to play out of Plano East High School in Plano, Texas.
Hartwig: Did you just come from or are you going to practice?
Diggs: I practiced earlier today, then I went to go talk to an advisor and now I’m going to go back to practice.
Hartwig: How long does it last and what is the routine like?
Diggs: I get here at 1 (p.m.) and then I practice till 5:30, with an hour or hour-and-a-half break in between. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday we practice the jump, and then on Tuesdays and Thursdays we just run.
Hartwig: What got you interested in high jumping?
Diggs: I’m from Wichita, Kansas and we had these events known as field day, which included basketball and track. Playing basketball got me interested in the high jump.
Hartwig: Does your class schedule ever interfere with your sport?
Diggs: No. I have great time management.
Hartwig: Not even a class online or maybe on the weekend?
Diggs: I’ve had a few online, but never any on the weekends. That’s just not right (laughs). You have to reschedule. Instead of taking a course from 1-2:30, I have to try to take classes not during practice time.
Hartwig: Do you like taking courses early in the morning or later in the evening?
Diggs: I’m an early person.
Hartwig: Same here. What places have you traveled to with the team?
Diggs: The best place by far has been California, and we visited Berkeley and Oakland. New Mexico was cool and hopefully this year we’ll travel to Pennsylvania.
Hartwig: So after you graduate this year, do you hope to keep competing in the high jump?
Diggs: Yeah. See, my situation is kind of funny because I got hurt last season and I’ve got one more year of eligibility left, so I’ll be taking classes in the technology school next semester hoping to go pro.
Hartwig: So when you’re not in class and your not competing in track, is there anything you like to do for recreation?
Diggs: Working… working… I have a job working at the Bauer School of Business, but if I do have any free time I enjoy going to the movies with my girlfriend.
Hartwig: Thanksgiving and Christmas are around the corner – do have any plans?
Diggs: To be with my family back in Wichita, Kansas.
