The Honors College will welcome distinguished peace and human rights activist Mient Jan Faber to campus today.
Faber, professor of Human Security in War Situations at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, will offer students and faculty insight on his years of work in both the international peace community and his explorations of various conflict zones.
Faber, the political director of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly, also served as the secretary general of the Interchurch Peace Council in the Hague, known as IKV, for 30 years. Nine Dutch churches formed IKV in 1996 to help the peace movement and human rights, according to Indiawijzer’s nongovernmental organization directory.
Faber has compiled written collections on the conflict zones he has visited, including the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and conflicts in Kasmir.
But Faber’s daughter, Hanneke Faber, and son-in-law, Aris Economon, are UH Honors College alumni.
Faber’s lecture will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the Honors College Commons, M.D. Anderson Memorial Library and will be followed by a question-and-answer session and reception. The event is free and open to the public.
