Students can learn about new research opportunities and defense-oriented innovations at the UH Department of Defense Research Conference on Thursday at the UH Hilton Hotel and Conference Center.
"The Department of Defense not only conducts its own research within its labs such as Air Force Research, Army Research and Navy Research, the DoD collaborates with universities, industry and national laboratories such as Sandia National Labs or Los Alamos National Laboratory," USAF First Lieutenant Quoc Vo said.
Vo said students could also get involved by becoming research assistants to university researchers.
The conference hopes to grant students skills that will help them learn about defense-oriented projects and technologies at the department, and how they can become further involved.
"Students will be able to understand how to request funding and grants from the department of defense for research," Vo said. "They will be introduced to the concept of white papers, full proposals, etc., which are needed to get grants for research programs."
The agenda will consist of three sessions (A, B and C), which run from 1 to 4:45 p.m. The complete agenda can be found on the Web site at www.times.uh.edu/dod.
Under Session C, designed to help the undergraduate, students will learn about research internships and fellowships available at DoD labs across the nation, learn about support post-document fellowships and young investigators, and learn first-hand from AFRL researchers who will share their career paths, research interests, and offer advice to students.
Colonel Jodine Tooke, director of communications AFCYBER, will be the luncheon keynote speaker and Air Force Cadet and Political Science senior George Van Dyke III will be moderating the Reality Chat in Session.
Online registration for full conference sessions is closed, but students can register onsite for sessions only on Thursday. The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is free to UH faculty, staff and students.
