Five Minutes of Fame: Grad students return to Texas roots

Brent Essmyer: Why did you go into geology?

Kelly Heyt: Ever since I was little, I was picking up rocks.

Essmyer: What kind of job are you going to get with your major?

Heyt: I’m probably going to go into the oil industry for a few years, and when I get tired with that I’m probably going to do environmental.

Essmyer: Do you have any internships planned?

Heyt: Not right now, but I will probably do an internship next summer.

Essmyer: With who?

Heyt: Not sure, but I’d like it to be with BP.

Essmyer: Are you a transfer student?

Heyt: Yes, I transferred from the University of Louisiana, but Texas is actually where I was raised. It’s great to be home.

Essmyer: When did you transfer?

Heyt: Last semester.

Essmyer: What do you do for fun?

Heyt: Right now I don’t have time for much, but I’m in the marching band so I go to most of the football games.

Essmyer: You must enjoy going to UH games.

Heyt: Yeah, I’m a big fan of football, and we have a really good team here.

Essmyer: What instrument do you play and how long have you been playing?

Heyt: Clarinet. I’ve played since intermediary school.

Essmyer: Why UH instead of somewhere else?

Heyt: One of my mom’s friends went here for a few semesters and said it was really good school. I heard from some of my professors that it had a really good geology department.

Essmyer: Do you live on campus?

Heyt: I live in Cougar Place. It’s easier since you don’t have to worry about traffic.

Essmyer: Who did you vote for and why?

Heyt: McCain. I’ve always been a Republican, and most of his views line up with mine.

Essmyer: Like what?

Heyt: Like his view on Iraq. We should stay in Iraq because we went in. If we withdraw now it wouldn’t be fair to them.
