Welcome to the 2009 spring edition of The Daily Cougar Sports section. With help from a talented staff of writers, including familiar names such as Ronnie Turner and Chris Elliott, I will do my best job to give you in-depth coverage of UH athletics.
Zaneta Loh, last semester’s Sports editor, is now The Daily Cougar’s editor in chief, so I will take on the role this spring. We still have most of our core staff intact, so expect more of the excellent coverage we have provided in the past.
However, there will be a few changes. Our Web site has undergone a makeover, and the newspaper will also have a different look.
There will be much more exclusive online content this semester, so be sure to check our Web site at www.thedailycougar.com every day. Readers should also expect to see Web blogs that will be updated on a regular basis.
The Cougars have participated in numerous events since we departed in December, so let’s catch up.
On Dec. 31, 2008, the Cougar football team won its first bowl game since 1980 when they topped Air Force 34-28 in the Armed Forces Bowl. This section will give readers a review of the season and a look toward 2009.
The men’s basketball team has started its season strong, posting road wins over UTEP and Sun-Belt favorite Middle Tennessee. UH also scored an impressive blowout victory against Alabama-Birmingham at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The women’s basketball team has also jumped out of the gate nicely, posting wins over Miami and Tulane. The Cougars erased an 18-point second half deficit to grab the victory over the Green Wave. Head coach Joe Curl won his 300th game when UH defeated Texas Southern 64-44 on Dec. 5.
Track and field begins its season soon, and both the men’s and women’s teams are expected to have a great year.
The baseball and softball teams should also give UH fans plenty of reasons to cheer, and The Daily Cougar will be there for every moment.
It is my mission to provide readers with plenty of entertaining and informative sports coverage, so kick back, relax and enjoy what we have to offer.
