Fighting Words: Consolation tournaments

Mario Trinidad: Extra experience enough to keep tourneys going

I completely believe that these tournaments should keep going.’

Some NCAA basketball critics, such as Dick Vitale, have said there is no reason why these teams should get an extra chance to play after they have played bad all season.’

I think he is wrong. These tournaments give those teams extra practice and a better grasp on how to win a Division I title next season.’

Plus, the fans get to see their favorite team play in a few more games. These tournaments are great ideas and help promote team victories for those who do not follow the sport.’

Last year, some people thought Houston was in the finals for the NCAA title, even though it was in the semifinals of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI). The main idea was people were following their teams again.’

These tournaments help players gain more experience, build fan support and provide added coverage of NCAA basketball in general.’

Ronnie Turner: Only real winners should be allowed in the postseason

Mario, I had no idea that you were a fan of the Chump Basketball Invitational. Only a fan of extremely mediocre basketball programs could produce this hot mess of an argument that you just gave.

Let’s face it. College basketball is better off with only two postseason tournaments. The NCAA Tournament and the National Invitational Tournament keep fans supplied with plenty of intriguing matchups and storylines.’

I doubt too many fans are anticipating the ‘selection show’ for the CBI and the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, college basketball’s latest postseason joke.’

Mario, your points are way off, especially those about teams needing extra practice. What about those teams with a lot of seniors? And give me a break about Houston. Anyone who thought the Cougars were competing for the NCAA title last year were either high, drunk, crazy or all of the above.

The teams that deserve to be in the postseason should be there. The rest should stay at home.

Matt Miller: Losers play in costly consolation tournaments

Ronnie’s right, Mario. This reminds me of the movie Billy Madison when Adam Sandler’s character is scolded for his moronic response.’

To quote, ‘Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.’

I’ll leave the grading to Judge Dredd, but why do we need 129 teams in the postseason? Who cares about Valparaiso and Houston (sorry Cougars fans, but it’s the truth)?

All these consolation tournaments do is cost universities money. UH could not have made much money, if any, from hosting a CBI quarterfinal game against Valparaiso, considering it had to shell out around $60,000 to host the game. Virginia could have lost $300,000 if it had won its semifinal matchup and hosted two games during the CBI’s ridiculous best-of-three championship series.

If you don’t make the NCAA Tournament or the NIT, your season should end. Only losers who blame everything on referees waste their times in these pathetic tournaments.

Judge Dredd: ‘Stop Looking At Me, Swan!’

Judge Dredd awards the victory to Matt solely on the basis of him using a Billy Madison quote in Fighting Words.’

If Judge Dredd’s memory serves him correctly, this is the first time an Adam Sandler quote has been utilized in this forum. Considering Sandler’s movies Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison are two of the all-time greats in comedic film history, Matt should receive two Fighting Words wins in advance.

Judge Dredd, however, gives no handouts. There were a few points in Matt’s argument that Judge Dredd did not agree with. The Cougars may not be an NCAA Tournament worthy team at this moment, due to some inconsistencies, but they are definitely worthy of a NIT spot.

Other than that, both Ronnie and Matt are on the right track. Two postseason tournaments are enough. Seriously, it’s starting to get worse than bowl games in college football. It’s like this ad Judge Dredd saw for a youth soccer league where every kid gets the same amount of playing time and there are no winners or losers. That’s a bunch of crap. What kind of lesson is this mentality teaching today’s pampered, lazy and obese youth?

Verdict: Judge Dredd needs a drink!
