Faculty Senate opposes guns on campus: A+
The UH Faculty Senate has taken the first steps to institutionalize its dissent of the Texas House bill allowing licensed students, faculty and staff to carry concealed handguns on campus, The Daily Cougar’s James Hale reported in ‘UH resolution to oppose gun laws,’ (News, Thursday).
The Faculty Senate was, for the most part, unified in Wednesday’s resolution to oppose the bill. Those for it suggested the alternative of tightening campus security.’
Campus security is a priority for UH students. Throughout the semester, The Daily Cougar has printed editorials and received comments from students calling for more security. These voices make up the majority of input we’ve received.
Provost John Antel has agreed to lead a task force that will investigate the Faculty Senate’s concerns. Let us hope that this task force isn’t just another dead end for bills the administration would rather leave on the shelf than reject outright.’
As a public institution, the University could not take any initiatives to disallow the bill’s measures if it is passed.
The administration should stand up for the concerns of the UH faculty before it’s too late.’
ScholarChip Challenge offers students funds, camaraderie: A
The University Center works semester-long to bring events to campus that meet the needs and wants of UH students. A notoriously diverse group, our classmates vary in age, ethnicity and even how far we live away from campus. The one thing all UH students need, however, is money.
This weekend, the UC is hosting UH’s first annual ScholarChip Challenge. Running Friday morning through Saturday evening in the UC’s Houston Room, the event will bring students together for a chance to win $2,000 in scholarships by competing in a tournament of Texas Hold ’em.’
Qualifying rounds will be held Friday and the finals on Saturday. Take a chance to compete for a scholarship while getting to know your fellow Cougars. For more information, visit http://collegiateentertainment.com/U_of_Houston.html.
