Student charged in UH shooting

Police arrested a UH student suspected in the Feb. 7 shooting death at the Metro bus stop on the 3500 block of Cullen near Hofheinz Pavilion, police said.

UH student Jeremy Lee Pierce has been charged with murder in the slaying of Joe Tall, the homeless man shot to death on campus while sleeping, police said.

The UH Department of Public Safety arrested 32-year-old Pierce on Wednesday after he threatened two UH students with a gun in a campus residential complex, police said.

Police said both UH students told UHDPS officials that during the altercation, Pierce made statements regarding the slaying of 47-year-old Tall.

UHDPS Sgt. John Williams and Officer Paul Mauro conducted the investigation and later transferred it to Houston Police Department investigators who charged Pierce after receiving statements from Pierce about Tall’s death, police said.

‘Paul Mauro and John Williams coordinated the investigation of the altercation and through good police work, connected the suspect to the homicide. They assisted the Houston Police Department in the successful investigation,’ said UHDPS assistant Chief of Police Brad Wigtil.

Pierce is scheduled to appear in court Friday. He is in Harris County Jail where bail as been set at $75,000.

Police Chief Malcolm Davis said the University remains statistically as safe and secure as most areas of Houston and safer than many.

Nearly 50 police officers and 24 security officers patrol the UH campus, and more than 500 security cameras enable police to monitor the campus around the clock, Davis said.
