Summertime is when many students find the opportunity to shape up or restart an exercise routine. In addition to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, there are other alternatives that can help the UH community get back in shape while contributing to a good cause.
The Health and Human Performance Department of the College of Education seeks to start this summer with an event called Wellness Wednesdays. Exercise and training sessions are being offered at the cost of donating a bag of canned foods.
A variety of classes will be offered, including indoor cycling, combative sport, weight training, rhythmic aerobics, Hatha yoga and beginning tennis. Every class is led, so experience or proficiency in the exercises is not required.
‘Anyone, even without any experience, can come work out, and I will help them if they aren’t doing it correctly,’ weight training instructor and kinesiology doctoral candidate Marius Dettmer said.
All proceeds will go toward the Star of Hope Mission, a local charity for the homeless.
The classes will be held every Wednesday until Aug. 5 in the Garrison and Melcher Gymnasiums. For the schedule and more information, visit http://hhp.uh.edu/currentevents/09_wellness.cfm
