Creative minds thrive at School of Art

The School of Art is an environment created for young artists, designers, theorists, critics and art historians who plan to make their passion for creativity the basis of their career.

Surrounded by world-class institutions like the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, The Menil Collection and The Contemporary Art Museum of Houston, the School of Art is a premiere spot for young artists.

Sculpture sophomore Julian Luna said location was one of the reasons she chose to attend the school.

‘They have a good work area and places to install inside and outside of the building,’ Luna said.

Some students said the best part of the program is not its location, but the professors and staff.

‘The teachers and staff are very talented, patient, and encouraging. I like the way they challenge their students,’ graphic communications sophomore Zahra Alshair said. ‘It was one of the main reasons I stuck with the program. Also, counselors were very open to questions and helping students. The entire staff is amazing.’

Painting junior Allison Piccirillo said she likes most of her professors because they are open to student ideas and allow students to express themselves through their art.

‘Professor Stack is a genius, and her experience in painting reflects in her teachings in the studio,’ she said. ‘Most of the professors are extremely open minded to new forms of art and experimentation.’

The School of Art consists of 26 faculty members who have received countless grants from prestigious foundations, including John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities and Fulbright Foundation.

The studio faculty has exhibited their works in major museums and galleries around the world. They have also received extensive commissions, awards, residencies and conclusive attention by showing their work in important exhibitions such as Whitney Biennial, Sao Paulo International Biennale and Venice Biennale.
