UH computer science graduate student Varun Raheja won the Best Break Championship category at the Association of College Unions International 9-Ball Championship last week.
The competition, held at Illinois State University in Normal, Ill., featured 52 students representing 41 universities and two-year institutions.
Raheja finished ninth overall after winning the UH qualifier and Region 12 qualifier.
He was the only UH student to participate in the tournament.
Marshall names AD
Marshall University has hired Mike Hamrick to replace the recently retired Bob Marcum as athletic director.
Hamrick, a 1980 graduate of Marshall, has spent the last six years serving as the athletic director at Nevada-Las Vegas.
He was selected from a list of official candidates, and will assume office in mid-August, Marshall President Stephen J. Kopp said.
Hamrick has also served as athletic director at East Carolina and Arkansas.
All eyes on UAB tight end
University of Alabama-Birmingham tight end Jeffery Anderson has been named to the 2009 John Mackey Award watch list.
The award is given to the nation’s best tight end and will be announced Dec. 10.
Anderson was also named to the second team of the preseason All C-USA squad after catching 23 passes last season.
ECU golfer sets record, qualifies
East Carolina sophomore golfer Jake Colleey finished third at the U.S. Amateur Sectional qualifier to earn a spot in the U.S. Amateur Championships.
Colley fired a course-record 64 en route to a 6-under score for the 36-hole qualifier last weekend at the Little River Golf Club in Carthage, N.C.
The U.S. Amateur Championships will be held Aug. 24-30 at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla.
Rice wins academic honor
For the fourth consecutive year, Rice recieved the C-USA Institutional Excellence Award.
The award is given to the C-USA institution with the highest GPA during the current academic year for all student athletes in conference-sponsored sports.
