Artists fill Fine Arts courtyard

The UH Arts Open House’s smorgasbord of live jazz, poetry readings and dance will engage aficionados of all stripes.

Admission to the Open House is free, and the event will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. today in the Fine Arts building at Entrance 16. Free pizza and soda will be served in the courtyard.

‘It’s a great experience for students to learn about the different arts on campus,’ Blaffer Gallery assistant curator of education Katy Lopez said. ‘This will give students an opportunity to sample (the arts), but it’s also a fun atmosphere.’

Enjoy the start of Houston’s autumn weather with a stroll around the Fine Arts Quadrangle. Students who find all of the campus landmarks and sculptures in the Blaffer Gallery’s photo scavenger hunt can win a prize.’

More environmentally-minded students should keep their wrappers and empty bottles handy for ‘Biomorphica,’ an art demonstration that will be held by the 14 high school participants of the Blaffer Gallery’s Young Artist Apprenticeship Program.’

These inner-city high school artists will work in teams to create a giant monster out of plastic bottles, wrappers, and other biodegradable goods that will be collected from Open House visitors.

Visitors can also watch an art major launch several inflatable sculptures, while fashionistas will enjoy several live demonstrations of screen-printing on t-shirts. Live dancers will perform site-specific routines as an improvisation troop runs rampant through the court.’

Finally, the School of Theatre and Dance will display a stage-prop and costume ‘petting zoo’ for visitors.’

Creative writing students will give live readings and the UH Jazz Trio will perform live.’

Those who would prefer to spend their time admiring work in a cooler, air-conditioned environment have options, too. Josephine Meckseper and Jon Pylypchuk’s’ found objects collections will be on display in the Blaffer Gallery, and a series of Meckseper’s 5-minute political satire films will run from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Dudley Hall on the first floor.’

Paul McCarthy fans can’t miss the advance season premier of PBS’ tell-all artist documentary series Art:21. The feature will also shed light on the careers of American photographer Cindy Sherman and British diorama creator Yinka Shonibare MBE. The 90-minute show will start in Dudley Hall at 5:30 p.m.’
